Ground Loops Explained

A ground loop consists of a series of pipes installed in a loop underground. Imagine reverse underfloor heating. The pipes absorb thermal energy from the ground around them, which is used by the heat pump to generate heating and hot water. Ground loops do require more room than borehole systems so are better suited for properties with ample land. It is important that the land can be accessed by digging machinery and is suitable for trenches to be dug. Although the installation requires digging trenches, the finished installation will not be noticeable, and turf can be reseeded or replaced once completed.

Borehole Explained

Boreholes are created by digging a deep hole into the ground in order to reach thermal energy held much deeper in the earth. The greater the depth of the hole, the hotter the temperatures and the more thermal energy will be available. The depth of the hole will all depend on your property as the hole will be sized to accommodate the heating and hot water demands the system will need to cater for. Boreholes are more contained and take less time to drill than ground loops. Like ground arrays, boreholes can’t be seen when the installation is complete. Borehole systems work well in properties with less available space.

Is my home suitable?

Both new and existing properties can benefit from the energy-saving capabilities of a heat pump. Their operating temperature in around 50 degrees compared to 70 degrees with a fossil fuel boiler. A larger surface area is needed to maximize their efficiency such as bigger radiators or underfloor heating.
